“I’m not trying to be racist!” is like my favorite defensive white person sentence fo all time.

When I catch myself saying it, it’s usually because I really want to not act like a privileged asshole, I’m just not sure what that means in that particular situation.

HOWEVER, I understand that it is not the responsibility of the nearest black person to help me out. It’d be cool if they did, because I don’t want to be ignorant and possibly make someone else feel shitty, but that’s my responsibility, not theirs.
